Nancy eventually learns from Takae that the night Kasumi died, she was going to see her friend Maryanne. The family then blamed themselves for her death, since no one was with her because they had all grown so far apart. When Kasumi was 42, she drowned in one of the baths in the ryokan. This may have been especially influenced by her absentee sister, whom their mother Takae notes did not even come for Kasumi's funeral. She lamented in her letters that she wished that her daughters would be closer. Kasumi was the manager of the Ryokan Hiei and often wrote to her penpal, Maryanne. Nancy finds letters written by Kasumi that contain clues towards solving this puzzle. Before her death, Kasumi created an elaborate puzzle hoping it would encourage her family to work together. Though the player never actually meets her during the duration of the game, she is often mentioned by other characters. She drowned one night in the baths of the inn, and now her ghost supposedly haunts the Ryokan.
